Artist Bio

Ash Scherer (they/she) received their B.A from St. Mary’s College of Maryland, 2019 with an art major and education minor. Over the past 9 years, their art has been exhibited in a variety of locations in Maryland, such as Colonial Beach, Baltimore, La Plata, as well as Virginia. Ash is a multidisciplinary conceptual artist that analyzes and addresses sociocultural factors, intimate relationships, and motherhood using two and three dimensional mediums. Mainly, they work with painting, collage, photography, and found objects. Additionally, their work consists of text-based, documentative, and performative practices with emphasis on expression and the art-making process. Their choice in color palette and mark making is subjective, reflecting the energy and feelings behind each subject or the mood during the creating process. This mode of painting is an adaptation of the artist's experiences during pregnancy and motherhood when time, energy and space towards creating dwindled. As a result, Scherer’s understanding of bodily autonomy, human rights, mental health, intimacy, sensuality, and sexuality has been a large motif throughout their most recent work. Whether a series is autobiographical or about another person(s), telling the stories of lives and creating a sense of narrative is the central theme behind their artwork.

Artist Statement

Through abstract forms and intentional marks and gestures, I create visual storytelling that communicates trauma, postpartum depression, pain of child-birth, alternative life-styles, queerness and other autobiographical experiences I have endured both as a young adult and a mother. Expressive colors burst onto the canvas, but in a structured, controlled manner and with meticulous thought, representing feelings of freedoms and constrictions, as well as a mind and body struggle. Many of my artworks are paired with text or poems that expand upon these experiences. Allowing my child to collaborate with me in the art making process, art becomes communal and much larger than the self.  Introducing collaboration brings her into my life as well as allows her to see my feelings and emotions while also creating a space for her and others to connect with similar topics.
